Explained: Really Simple Syndication

An RSS usually includes the title of the update and a link to the source website. Some of the benefits of RSS have already been stated...it gives the latest updates and it saves on surfing time. But there are also other benefits:

Users can choose the websites to subscribe to in their RSS aggregators and can change the subscriptions at any time. It reduces email clutter - although an email address is used to sign up for an RSS aggregator, updates aren't sent to your email. This also eliminates spam. All that is needed to unsubscribe is to delete the RSS feed from your aggregator. RSS can be a good advertising tool, since subscribers are interested in the information provided.

There are also some drawbacks to RSS:

It's a new technology, and many websites don't support RSS. Some users prefer email updates instead of RSS feeds. Graphics and photos may not be included with updates unless the aggregator is web-based. The identity of the source website can become confusing since RSS feeds don't display URLs or website names. Website publishers cannot determine the number of users or how many times the users visited. Publishers also cannot determine why a user unsubscribed, which is important to improve advertising efforts. Most readers still prefer complete updates over summaries and will access the website, creating higher traffic and demands on the server.

In order to use RSS, an RSS feed and an RSS aggregator are required. The feed comes from an RSS-supported website. An aggregator is used to read the RSS feed from the source website.

Aggregators come in two forms: downloadable (desktop) aggregator, and online aggregator. The online aggregators are normally free, but you'll probably have to pay for a downloadable aggregator. After registration, both versions allow you to customize or choose your feeds. The paid aggregators allow more freedom in customizing feeds, and are normally used by more experienced users.

Once you've registered, scan the homepage of your target website for the RSS or XML button. The button contains the RSS code that needs to be copied into the aggregator. Copy the code, which includes the website URL, and paste it into your aggregator.

Syndic8 provides a directory of websites that support RSS. You're now ready to receive RSS feeds from your target websites.
